๐ก What is Artificial Intelligence? A plain-English guide for beginners

The one-sentence answer
Artificial intelligence is software that learns patterns from examples, instead of following rules a programmer wrote by hand. That's it.
Traditional software is like a recipe โ someone wrote every step. AI is different: you show it thousands of examples, and it works out the rules itself. That's why a spam filter gets better the more email it sees, and why a chatbot can answer questions nobody explicitly taught it to answer.
What AI is great at
- Writing, summarising, and translating text.
- Spotting patterns in data and images.
- Drafting emails, posts, and documents in seconds.
- Answering questions in plain language.
What AI is bad at
- Telling the truth reliably โ it sometimes invents facts with total confidence.
- Exercising judgement โ knowing whether something is appropriate or wise.
- Knowing your specific situation โ your context, your history, your customers.
Why this matters to you
Once you understand that AI is a brilliant pattern-matcher (not a thinking mind), everything about it makes sense โ including why you should use it for the boring work, and always double-check it for the important stuff.
