Prompting that actually works
The three ingredients of a good prompt, with real examples.
A prompt is just an instruction
A 'prompt' is nothing more than the instruction you give an AI. If you've typed a question into a chatbot, you've already prompted. The word sounds technical, but it's simply 'what you ask for' โ and like any instruction, clearer in means better out.
The three ingredients
Almost every good prompt has three parts. Miss one and the output is mediocre; add all three and it's dramatically better.
- Context โ who you are and what you're doing. 'I'm a small business owner writing to an unhappy customer.'
- An example โ show the style or format you want, or describe it clearly. 'Keep it warm, two short paragraphs, under 120 words.'
- A clear ask โ say exactly what good looks like. Include length, tone, what to include and what to avoid.
Before and after
Weak prompt: 'Write me an email.' Strong prompt: 'Write a short, warm email to a customer named Sam explaining their order is delayed two days, offering 10% off, under 100 words, friendly but not gushing.'
Same tool, same day โ completely different quality. The difference isn't magic phrases or 'secret prompts' you see sold online. It's specificity. Tell the AI what you actually want, the way you'd brief a smart new colleague.
Prompting is a conversation, not a one-shot
The real skill is iteration. Write a decent prompt, look at the result, then tell it what to change: 'shorter', 'more formal', 'the third paragraph isn't clear, try again'. That back-and-forth โ steering, not typing a perfect instruction once โ is where the great output comes from.
Key takeaway
Context + an example + a clear ask = a great prompt. And prompting is a conversation: ask, read, refine. Specificity beats secret tricks every time.
๐ Try it now
- 1Type a vague prompt, then re-type it with context, an example, and a clear ask.
- 2Compare the two results side by side.
- 3Take one good answer and refine it with one follow-up: 'make it shorter and more confident'.
