๐จ What is 'generative' AI?
AI that creates new things โ text, images, music, code โ instead of just classifying.

'Generative' AI is AI that makes new things. Most older AI *classified* โ it looked at an email and said 'spam or not spam'. Generative AI goes the other way: you give it a prompt, and it produces brand-new text, an image, music, or code that never existed before.
ChatGPT generating an essay, an image tool drawing 'a cat astronaut', a music model composing a tune โ these are all generative AI. The 'generate' is the point: the output is new, not just a label on existing data.
How does it make something from nothing? It doesn't, really. It learned the patterns of millions of examples, then produces new output that *fits* those patterns. The cat astronaut is new, but it's built from every cat and every astronaut the model ever saw.
This is why generative AI is both amazing and tricky: it creates fluently and endlessly, but it's remixing patterns, not understanding the world. Useful as a creative partner โ dangerous as a source of truth.
๐ Try it in 60 seconds
- 1Ask an AI to write a haiku about your favourite food.
- 2Then ask it to generate a short story in the style of your favourite author.
- 3Notice the difference: it creates โ but check anything factual it slips in.
